Bill Sawyer and Karena Paukulis set a new tandem record, shattering the
previous record by 32 seconds while Ed and Beth achieved the dubious
distinction of being the fastest riders on three legs after one of Beth's
pedals came apart during the ride. (Ed promised to check his maintenance
records more carefully in the future.)
Congratulations to Harold DuLong and Steve Cruickshank who both made it to the
finish line without incident.

It was quite a night. Rebecca Wellons shocked herself and the rest by setting
a new women's standard for 2003, 42 seconds faster than last week. She now
has the second fastest women's time ever and is now just 37 seconds behind
Karen Smyers' record. Maybe we should make her chase Peter Megdal more often.
Peter is showing himself to be the most consistent winner yet, coming in first
each of the last 6 times he's ridden.
Dan Butler is also being strangely consistent. He ended up in 9th place again
- for the 5th time in a row!
Steve Cruickshank and Harold Dulong rode to a near dead heat in an
unconventional race for the lanterne rouge. Despite a flat tire, Steve did
cross the line - calling out his number loud and clear from the passenger seat
of the truck carrying his bike. After returning from his extended ride into
Bedford center, Harold's friends reminded him that they were going out for
beer AFTER the race. (I suppose technically we should DQ Steve for taking
pace inside a motor vehicle, giving Harold the win.)
We're still looking for another recumbent rider to challenge George
Reynolds....
NEBC riders note: September 3rd will be the NEBC Club Championship time trial.
All riders are welcome. NEBC will be scored separately for championship
points.
Also note that September 10th will be the last time trial of the season.

Rebecca Wellons set a PR and the fastest time of 2003 for the women. I'll
recheck my notes, but I think she edged out Mary Ann Martinez (24:32.9) for
the third fastest women's time ever - behind Karen Smyers' record (23:10.1)
and Lauren Gaffney (23:57.9)
Tandem team Ed and John showed that the sum is faster than the parts, but
still coming in shy of Ed Parsons/Michele Smith (21:47.0)
Also according to my somewhat spotty canibal rider records, Matt Svatek set
the second fastest time without aerobars - just behind Ray Johnson (22:01.9)

Traffic was heavy and I wish I could say that all our rides were incident free,
but there were a couple of close calls. Louis Salemy had to come to a complete
stop to avoid traffic, and Steven Brown was actually forced into a right turn,
leaning on the side of a van turning into a parking lot at the Carlisle rotary.
Luckily sharp handling skills kept both from crashing, but it is a warning to
us all to be careful out there. This is just a training race. Think about
safety first, follow the traffic laws, then think about your time.
Eric Sheagley set the pace for the men, with a PR, followed by perennial
favorites Colman, Peter, Mike, and Justin - all under 22 minutes.
Dede Griesbauer took top honors for the women. Congratulations to Sarah Groff
for setting a PR despite mechanical troubles. Somehow Judy Insalaco said she
missed a turn and did the tour of Bedford/Carlisle, yet we still recorded a
26:31 time. We're not quite sure who actually crossed the line. Any
explanations are welcome....

If it's Wednesday, there's a time trial, and if there's a time trial, it must
be raining. Despite the rain, people are getting fitter and faster with the
top 10 under 23 minutes.
For the men, Sam Morse held off Peter Megdal's disk wheel assault and Josh's
cannibal attack.
Jess Truslow rode her 2003 best to lead the women, followed by Karena (and the
black-hole mtn. biker) and newcomer Sarah Groff.

It didn't seem like a particularly fast night, but nearly a third of the riders
set their best times of the season. Congratulations to all who set PRs and
especially to Karin Turer who cut her time by almost a minute and a half.
I also want to thank Bob and Lee Evans again for their invaluable help running
registration this spring. Happily for them, but unfortunately for us, they are
now off to become bicycle tour leaders and I'm now hoping for volunteers to
help with registration in their absence. Please let me know if you would like
to spend an hour or so with us on Wednesday evenings. (For those of you in the

Though the rain let up long enough for most of the riders to finish, the roads

Despite being off her best time, Jess Truslow set the season's best mark for the
women tonight. Congratulations to Annette on a PR and to newcomer Karin Turer for
breaking the 30 minute mark. Where are the rest of the women?
Colman edged out Sam to lead the men's group followed by Eric Sheagley who cut 2.5
minutes off his previous time! (I heard he attended Peter's time trial clinics.)
Peter and Justin came in close behind to make it the second week in a row with the
top five under 22 minutes.
Ed and Bill put in the first tandem ride of the season - just 12 seconds off their
course record. Anyone else care to double up?

Sorry Sam and Matt, but when I rechecked the times, Kurt was faster, setting a PR and giving everyone
a time to chase. He's still 21 seconds behind Mark McCormack's record last year, but it was a
fantastic ride this early in the season. The rest of the top five are now under 22 minutes and
judging from the number of PRs, it's going to be a fast summer!

Cold and breezy weather kept most riders off last year's pace, but Colman still
