Lake Aurburn Road Race, John Laupheimer, June 3rd
Well, we had a pretty good race despite the rain. I had to take the tires off my wheels to drain the water out of the inner chambers. There was a 35 person or so field and I was the only NEBCer. The race was not really very fast to start with not much in the way of attacks. Everyone was together at the 15 mile mark of the first lap. By the time we got to the top of the climb, presto, there were about 12 of us off the front. I didn’t think we were even trying. Two guys from Bobs went off the front at the beginning of the second lap and the rest of us frankly should of caught them but didn’t really try hard enough. We almost missed the same turn as the 4’s because the race and wheel car were up with the two guys off the front. But the small group of us made the right choice (right.) As we neared the finish there were a series of abortive attacks and 8 of us were more or less together coming around the right hand turn with 800 meters. I was too cautious in the turn (it was pouring and I hate road rash) and let 5 guys get ahead of me that I should have been with. So 8th place. I enjoyed the race.
