in his own words
How did you spend this off-season?
I spent the off season getting in some quality training in this mild Durango winter. I also did some skate skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding when the weather turned. Other than that, I’ve been in studying for school relaxing on the weekends with friends.
What are your goals for 2009?
My goals for 2009 include: Upgrading to Cat 2, Helping teammates, Top 10 on GC at Fitchburg and Top 5 on a stage at Fitchburg. Also, I’d like to enjoy my time racing and having a good time with teammates and friends at the races and on training rides.
What is your Favorite Race?
Tour of the Gila- Its a tough race with selective stages that help split up the field, one needs to be well prepared for the race, as getting dropped on 10th mile on the second is commonplace for the unprepared.
*What’s the one thing you’ve done on a ride (training or race) that
you will absolutely never do again?*
Eat one of Rick Crawford’s high glucose, 2 year old, “energy” gels before a race with not enough water. I think I spent the next two hours after the race in a fetal position.
What is your favorite loop to ride?
Any ride through Groton, Dunstable, or into NH.
I race my bike because …
of the people it surrounds me with and the feeling I get after a good race.
If I could train anywhere, it would be …
Durango, CO and New England.
The movie that spends the most time in my DVD player while I’m on the trainer is …
I try not to ride the trainer if the weather is that bad out, I’d rather x-train.
My philosophy on training …
If you have a coach, listen to them (I know too many people who pay for or receive coaching and don’t take advantage of it). If you’re sick, take it easy. Go long and slow in the winter. Hit it hard a couple times a week during the racing season.
