in his own words
Turn ons are shiney bikes with knobby tires. Turn
offs are heavy, slow bikes with wide saddles.
Q1: How did you get involved with NEBC?
I had heard about NEBC’s club rides, and joined a Saturday ride from the Bedford Library. I became a member shortly thereafter, and now have raced road, cyclocross, and mountain bike events with the club.
Q2: What was your best time on the bike?
I remember a few years back when we had a big ice storm on top of a deep snow. I got out on my mountain bike with studded tires and rode down to and around the golf course in Concord — it was a beautiful day, and it was amazingly smooth and fast. I had a blast.
Q3: How many flats have you had in one ride?
For the most part I’ve been pretty lucky (knock on wood) — I don’t think I’ve ever had more than two.
Q4: Has your cyclo-computer ever been victim to the Cycle Loft’s security beam, making your max speed 99mph?
Huh?
Q5: What far reaching places have you biked?
One of the neatest rides was in Mesa Verde National Park – the ranger told me about a road closed to cyclists, but then also told me that the gate wasn’t opened until 9, and if he saw a cyclist he’d make them turn around and ride out. I took that as an invitation for an early morning ride. I’ve also mountain biked in Moab, followed some stages of the Tour de France, and done some great rides in the Adirondacks.
Q6: Any star-struck riding adventures? Anything from blasting John Kerry on the hills or riding by McCormick (if he ever flatted)?
I bumped into Tyler Hamilton in Concord many years ago when he was still with the Postal team.
Q7: What’s your favorite on-bike food?
Gu. Gu. And more Gu.
