NEBC Elite Men's Team Mission Statement

The Northeast Bicycle Club was founded over 50 years ago with the primary goal of developing bicycle racing in greater Boston and beyond. For years the club has been successful in its goal of providing races and clinics for the local riding population and a team framework for its members, and over time many members have graduated into other teams racing at higher categories in the sport. In 2006 the NEBC Board of Directors decided that adding explicit support for higher category riders would benefit the club’s larger goals, and the NEBC Men’s and Women’s Elite Teams were formed, each with subtly different sets of goals.

The Elite Men’s Team aims to:

  • Create and sustain the core of a high-category racing team within the club. By providing explicit support for a core racing team, riders are encouraged to stay within the club as they improve rather than graduate out of the club just as they are developing a real understanding of what racing is all about.
  • Provide a team environment to help ALL club racers achieve their goals. The Elite Team is explicitly not intended to be a clique of special riders; rather, the Elite Team is intended to be integrated within the club and to race cooperatively with other members, providing a team framework for all riders.
  • Contribute positively to the development of cycling in the club and the community. The elite riders can use their experience to provide clinics and other education to the club and the larger community, and their knowledge will also be an asset at club races and other events
  • Provide positive examples of responsible and respectful bike racers to the club and the community. Elite Team members are chosen not only for their racing potential but also for their contributions to the club, and how they behave on and off the bike.

The Men’s team offers competitive benefits to its racers, who are chosen and invited in the fall for the upcoming year. Team selection heavily favors existing club members who have come through the ranks with the club, have a desire to work with and for the team, show ability to grow as a racer, and have the club’s larger goals at heart.
